Hunting for “Razor Clams” and Discovered One of the Most Satisfying Ways to Find Food
マテ貝狩りが楽しすぎてハマりました
The other day, I went razor clam hunting with friends in Japan.
Razor clams are long, narrow shellfish that live buried vertically under the sand. Unlike regular clam digging, finding them requires a very unique technique.
First, you search for tiny holes in the sand.
Then you sprinkle a little salt into the hole.
And then…
A few seconds later, the razor clam suddenly pops out like,
“Wait… what’s happening?!”
That’s your moment.
Grab it before it disappears back into the sand.
Probably one of the most satisfying things I’ve done in my life! We got about 2kg of clams in 1.5 hours.

この前、マテ貝の潮干狩りに行ってきました。
マテ貝（razor clam）は、細長い形をした二枚貝で、砂浜の中に縦に潜って暮らしています。
普通の貝みたいにただ砂を掘って探すのではなく、マテ貝には少し変わった捕まえ方があります。
まず砂浜に小さな穴を見つける。
そこに塩を少し入れる。
すると…
数秒後、マテ貝が「何が起きた!?」という感じで砂の中から顔を出します。
その瞬間を逃さずキャッチ。
世界中を旅していて思うのは、その土地の文化を知る一番早い方法は「食」を追いかけること
高級な料理だけじゃなくて、こういう昔から続いている小さな知恵の中にこそ、人と自然の関係が詰まっている気がします。
ただの潮干狩りだと思って行ったら、小さな砂浜でまた一つ新しい世界を発見しました。
